Lim Selah Yena

From Korea
Harajuku Campus
Job offer from Swissport Japan Ltd.

Why did you decide to study in Japan?
After living half of my life in Korea and the other half in the United States, I realized that each country and their own unique culture and values have shaped me as a person and broadened my perspectives on life. This realization made me want to explore another country and see what it's like to live there.
Learning another language is like gaining another lens to view the world. You get to see and understand things that you've never known before. I want to learn and absorb the things that I see in Japan and expand my perspectives.
Why did you decide to study at ISI Harajuku Campus?
I chose ISI Harajuku because it is a campus that not only teaches Japanese but also helps students with their careers in Japan. Harajuku campus has a very nice and clean interior. The location is awesome too, it's right in between Harajuku station and Shibuya station.
What do you think was the best thing of enrolling in ISI Harajuku Campus?
I honestly think enrolling in ISI was one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life. ISI helped me a lot with improving my Japanese and finding a job, but more than anything, it introduced me to great people. I love everyone I met through ISI. All teachers have different styles of teaching but they all have the same passion and love for the students. Students are from all over the world with different backgrounds and experiences but they're all here for one goal, to learn the same language and culture. I love talking with them, getting to know about them and learning from them. I've built friendships and bonds that will last for a long time. It was an amazing experience.
What is the most interesting part of the class?
We have different teachers teaching the class every day, so we get to experience different teachers and their unique teaching styles. There's also various subjects and materials, such as daily conversations, business conversations, shadowing, writing business emails, and JLPT Prep. All subjects are very practical and useful. I am able to apply what I learned from school right away in real life.
Since students are from many different countries and backgrounds, it is always very interesting to hear about their experiences in their countries, and the cultures and values they carry. The class discussions are always very fun because of this.
Why did you decide that you wanted to work in Japan?
I decided to work in Japan because I fell in love with Tokyo and its people. It is a beautiful city with people who have good hearts. Also, I want to continue living in Japan so I can get to a point where I can confidently say that I am fluent in Japanese.
Do you have any reason or motivation for choosing the company you were offered?
I previously worked for an airline company before I came to Japan and I loved the job, so I wanted to continue working in the same field in Japan. I also thought that my ability to speak foreign languages would be helpful for working at the airport.
Looking back on your job-hunting activities, what were the hardest and best parts?
The hardest part during the job hunting was definitely the language barrier. Since I was not familiar with the Japanese business cultures, sometimes even writing a simple email to a company felt difficult because I couldn't tell what was culturally/socially appropriate and what is not. The teachers at ISI was always happy to help me with this and they helped me rephrase my sentences so that I would sound more polite and professional. They were also helping me revise my resume, practice for job interviews and giving feedbacks. I felt safe and confident because I had professional Japanese teachers who were supporting me.
What are your goals and dreams for the future?
My current goal is to become fluent in Japanese.
My dream is always to live my life to the fullest. I want to work hard, have a lot of fun, meet a lot of people, see a lot of things, and make my time in Japan a very memorable one.
Please give a message to those who are considering to study at ISI.
