Setsubun means "parting of the seasons" and is a traditional event to ward off illnesses, disasters and other bad things that tend to occur at the turn of the seasons. It is said that if you throw beans at the 'ogres' and eat as many beans as your age, you will be safe and healthy. Let's throw beans at the demons for the happiness of you and those around you!

Zenkoji Temple boasts a history of around 1,400 years and has attracted many worshippers since ancient times as a 'once in a lifetime' place to visit. Ueda Castle is one of the 100 best castles in Japan and a symbol of the city. Walk through the castle town that flourished around Ueda Castle. The townscape, where the history and culture built up by the Japanese people still live on, is perfect for a stroll. There are plenty of places to stop off, from long-established local gourmet restaurants to fashionable cafés.
Let's wear a kimono and take part in a traditional tea ceremony. Through the windows of the tea room, you will enjoy the beautiful Japanese winter scenery. You will have a relaxing time, savouring tea and traditional Japanese sweets while gazing at the Japanese garden. It is truly a peaceful time.
Why not go and see the world's only monkeys bathing in hot springs? At the Jigokudani Monkey Park, where there is an open-air bath exclusively for monkeys (and monkeys seem to enjoy it!) . This is a great chance to observe wild monkeys so closely!
Katsushika Hokusai was an ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period who influenced people from many different genres of art around the world. He called himself a "painting fanatic" and spent his last years in Nagano. The Hokusai Museum displays a number of valuable prints left by Hokusai and is a must-see for anyone who wants to experience a little bit of Japanese art!
